A small sample of the items one can buy at Dantokpa market in Cotonou, the largest in the country. Covering some number of square kilometers and selling everything you can imagine, it of course is a hotbed for items related to the practice of vodu, the traditional religion of Ghana, Togo and Benin. Located near where musical instruments are sold, I could not help but investigate.

This table had numerous dried chameleons, birds, heads of various animals, hooves, feet and more. Another booth had a full hippopotamus head for sale (!), a dried and splayed baboon, crocodile heads, lion heads….you name it and you could find it…or someone could find it for you. Of course, the knowledge of what to do with these things is a whole other field of knowledge.
