"A profound talent in the area of drumming and percussion."
Tom Haugen – Take Effect Curtis Andrews is a Canadian musician with global persuasions, who specializes in South Indian percussion, West African drum/dance, drumset, and mbira. A percussionist, composer and teacher who creates music that is informed by his many years of experience with these traditions yet transcends most categories. He leads The Offering of Curtis Andrews, his award-winning ensemble which recently released a new album called Speaking Hands (2021), a trove of scintillating world-jazz compositions, leaning heavily in the direction of South India and West Africa. The album features special guest Dr. Trichy Sankaran, a world-renowned virtuoso of the mridangam, the barrel-shaped drum used in the Carnatic music of Southern India. Andrews has been a disciple of Dr. Sankaran for the past 20+ years. Variants of his ensemble have performed across Canada and recently completed a tour in Southern India, with a tour in Chile planned for early 2025. Andrews is planning a tour of Canada in summer 2025 with this ensemble and will feature Trichy Sankaran as special guest. |
