Sankaran @ 80: A Carnatic Concert in Honour of Trichy Sankaran's 80th Birth Year Main Stage at Surrey Arts Centre Surrey, BC 7:30pm Tickets HERE Facebook Event Page Don’t miss this chance to experience a living legend of Indian classical music, mridangam maestro Sri Trichy Sankaran in concert with a team of India’s leading musicians in a rare Carnatic kutcheri (South Indian classical music recital). Sandeep Narayan hails from a musical family and is one of India’s brightest vocalists, having concertized internationally for the past 15 years. He is supported by V.V.S. Murari on violin (son of esteemed violinist V.V. Subramaniam) and K.V. Gopalakrishnan on kanjira (lizard-skin tambourine), one of South India’s best kanjira. Sri Trichy Sankaran is one of the greatest living performers of the mridangam, the most important percussion instrument in South India. He has been a professional musician for nearly 7 decades, has concertized around the globe, and has engaged in cross-cultural performances and collaborations with musicians from numerous genres ranging from jazz to gamelan to African music to contemporary classical. Aside from being a performer, he is also an esteemed composer of intercultural music, an author of two books, and an educator of high-repute, having taught at York University for over 40 years. He is also no stranger to the West Coast of Canada, as he was part of Expo 86, then went on to teach throughout the 90s at SFU’s summer percussion program, and in the last decade has visited to collaborate with the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO), and most recently in collaboration with local world-jazz musician Curtis Andrews and his ensemble, The Offering of Curtis Andrews. Despite all of these visits to Vancouver, this is the first time he is performing in a classical context in Vancouver since 1981. As such, such this a rare opportunity to see the world-renowned maestro in his element. |

African Chamber Music: The Music of Ghana and Zimbabwe Reimagined With Strings The ANNEX 823 Seymour St. Vancouver, BC 4pm Featuring: Kurai Mubaiwa (mbira, voice, percussion/Zimbabwe) Kofi Gbolonyo (voice, percussion/Ghana) Curtis Andrews (voice, percussion) Meredith Bates (violin) Sarak Kwok (viola) Peggy Lee (cello) Josh Zubot (violin) Tickets HERE Facebook Event Page African Chamber Music you wonder...what is that? Well, we will present traditional music from the Shona of Zimbabwe and the Ewe of Ghana, without typical accompaniment/instrumentation. Sure there will be some percussion, but a string quartet will form the bulk of the "response" in the call/response format. Historically, the forces and context that led to the development of Western classical music were at the diametrically opposite end of where traditional African music comes from, the most obvious being the connection between the growth of Europe and the rise of classical music from the profits of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Not to mention the view from most Europeans from first contact until recently (some would currently) that African music is not even music (let us be honest, many Europeans did not even consider African people as human, hence their justification for enslavment). Anyhow heavy history aside, we are aiming to add to that conversation and change the way such musics can be presensented and perceived. |

Trichy Sankaran, Curtis Andrews, Jared Burrows, Patrick Boyle as part of the Sound Symposium L.S.P.U. Hall St. Johns, NL 7:30pm Info HERE This has been 22 years in the making. I first started studying mridangam with Sankaran Sir in 2000, and have had the privilege of playing with him on one previous occasion in my "hometown" of St. John's (Carbonear is my real hometown). To be able to play with him again, at the Sound Symposium (which has deep meaning to my development), and to play some of MY OWN compositions with him, is something of a completion of a circle. And to top it off, I get to do it with two of my closest musical brothers. Big thanks to MusicBC for travel support. |
